Its common for people on the spectrum and or developmental disability to get frustrated and act out on negative behaviours from there focus troubles and blame themselves. But gently reminding them to not beat yourself up. Instead of using self-critical judgement, use diminishing attention as a reminder it’s time to focus, do some deep breaths and turn off all distractions.
🎵 Implicate some Background Noise
Applying soothing music and being in a sensory based friendly environment will not only provide focus but will provide mental clarity for the brain to be utilized at its highest potential.

Visual clutter can impair the individuals focus. So, a clear working area is essential.
✅ Break the goal/task down into small steps
Doing so decreases anxiety and helps implicate focus being able to accomplish the small goals, then the bigger goal gets accomplished.
💙 Taking Love Based Accountability
Whether it’s the parents and or support provider in the situation it's imperative to applying accountability with healthy body language and a peaceful/serene toned voice. Sometimes using the voice of a favorite tv/movie show character helps.
🗣️ Paraphrase Conversations
Paraphrasing what the person said helps them digest the conversation, ensuring that they understand you and then formulate a response.
📈 Having visual charts for reminders as well as the goals themselves
For both short term and long-term goals, have a tangible touchstone that connects you too the other objectives. Through the visual charts the individuals can visually and mentally grasp how to apply each step to the goal/task.
🏃♂️ Have small breaks with movement from sensory based work area
Doing so helps promote focus and overall work development work quality. Positive Encouragement: Use positive self-talk and affirmations to help them pay attention.
Reminder of past successes and behavioral tools will help with positive reinforcement if feeling defeated.
✍️ Write Everything Down
Doing so is imperative with tracking the goals, tasks, positive and negative behaviours that come up. In turn helps with building awareness around what healthy tools work best for focusing and getting goals/tasks done.
